Gli studi umanistici, e più in particolare gli studi filologici, danno come primo risultato la capacità di organizzare il pensiero e di esprimerlo con efficacia. Il modello non è tuttavia la retorica sofistica, ma il λόγος stoico, che trasforma il χάος in κόσμος, e il Λόγος creatore del Vangelo di Giovanni. L'umanista è la coscienza critica e la memoria storica della società. La coscienza critica si esprime nell'elogio della lentezza e nell'elogio dell'eresia come capacità di ponderazione e assunzione di responsabilità; la memoria storica consente il recupero delle radici della nostra civiltà, caratterizzata dalla reinterpretazione cristiana della humanitas classica. Classical studies, philological studies in particular, give as first result the capacity to organize thought and express it efficaciously. However, the model is not sophistical rhetoric, but the Stoical λόγος which transforms the χάος into κόσμος, and the Λόγος creator of St John's Gospel. A humanist is the expression of the critical conscience and historical memory of society. The critical conscience expresses itself in the commendation of slowness and in the commendation of heresy because they reveal the capacity to reflect carefully and assume one's own responsibilities. Historical memory allows the recovery of the roots of our civilization that is characterized by the christian re-interpretation of classical humanitas. The final point of the discourse is the affirmation of the supremacy of knowledge over the capacity to do, as well as the supremacy of knowledge over the material product, because matter is sterile while human spirit is fruitful.
