Secondo l'interpretazione corrente, il v. 712 delle Vespe di Aristotele fa riferimento all'atteggiamento di chi corre dietro a chi ha potere di dispensare o negare il salario riflettendo l'atteggiamento di obbedienza agli ordini e di sottomissione del popolo alla classe politica. Tuttavia è possibile anche un'interpretazione alternativa: al modo dei raccoglitori di olive, che, durante la raccolta, sono costretti a muoversi qua e là per raccogliere i frutti sparsi, anche i giudici popolari debbono muoversi come vuole chi li paga.
