Le finalità della scuola oggi possono riassumersi nella funzione formativa e orientativa della scuola, non solo nel campo più direttamente culturale, ma anche in quello dello sviluppo della personalità dell'educando ed in quello del suo inserimento attivo nella società. Gli insegnanti devono utilizzare le diverse discipline scolastiche non come fine a se stesse, ma come occasione di crescita umana e politica dei giovani. L'obiettivo che si pone l'insegnante è quello di incentivare nel discente le sue capacità critiche e le sue capacità di analisi razionale del reale. Perciò il docente è chiamato a condividere con l'educando un cammino di formazione integrale della personalità, affinchè l'allievo possa acquisire gli strumenti per vivere la propria esistenza autonomamente e responsabilmente. Ciascun soggetto ha la possibilità di accedere alle condizioni fondative dell'identità umana. Questo è possibile perché l'essere umano deve agire per essere, non è un dato, una realtà statica, ma è sempre possibilità, è un compito da realizzare. L'uomo si può trasformare in una prospettiva di umanizzazione. L'educazione si configura, quindi, come una specifica azione orientata ad assicurare "il manifestarsi dell'umano proprio di ogni persona". L'educazione può essere descritta come un processo attraverso il quale gli adulti di una società si prendono cura della generazione più giovane per aiutarla a stabilire un rapporto positivo e concreto con la realtà (Chiosso 2009). È questa, dunque, la sfida alla quale la scuola deve tendere contribuendo alla formazione di futuri uomini e cittadini.

Today the objectives of school can be summed up as follows: the educative function and the guidance functions not only in the cultural field, but also in the one related to the development of the educating subject's behavior and his active integration in society. Teachers should use the different school subjects not as end in themselves, but as tools making students grow up as social individuals and active and responsible citizens . Teachers aim at raising in their students either their critical skills and the ability to analyze the reality (around them) in a rational way . That's the reason why teachers should share their students' path leading to the global formation of their behavior so that every single student can acquire the essential tools to live an autonomous and responsible life. Each individual can have access to the founding conditions of human identity . In fact the human being acts to develop his self, he's not a given, a static reality , but he is a possibility, a project to be accomplished. The individual should search for a humanizing perspective. The education can be described, therefore, as a specific action aimed at ensuring "the manifestation of the human side of every person". Education can be described as a process through which the adults in a community take care of the younger generation to help them establish a positive and concrete relationship with reality (Chiosso 2009). This is the challenge at which the school must aim by contributing to the upbringing of future men and citizens.
