Tra diritti, dignità umana e autodeterminazione: la storia esemplare del movimento Vita Indipendente

Lo scritto prende in esame l'opera del movimento Vita Indipendente, soffermandosi tanto sul piano teorico, così come su quello delle sue azioni concrete. L'intento è quello di mettere in luce come, a partire dalla problematica rivendicazione di spazi di autonomia in seno alla società, gli attivisti del movimento - prendendo coscienza della propria identità e dell'evidente asimmetria della loro condizione, sotto il profilo sociale e politico - abbiano realizzato iniziative che consentissero loro di rivendicare diritti soggettivi in campo civile, di considerarsi portatori di scopi politici particolari e di diventare cittadini a pieno titolo del demos. La riflessione prende in considerazione, da un lato, la capacità del movimento di mettere a fuoco concetti quali "dignità umana", "diritti fondamentali", "eguaglianza di opportunità", "riconoscimento", "autodeterminazione"; dall'altro, sottolinea l'originalità con cui è stato in grado di rigenerare i suddetti principi (mostrando i limiti concreti della loro attuazione in una società liberaldemocratica) e di condurli «dal cielo dei principi» ad un piano di effettività giuridica. Il saggio, accanto all'analisi dei suddetti nuclei tematici, si sofferma sulle caratteristiche e gli obiettivi del movimento e si concentra sulla genesi e sull'evoluzione dello stesso, offrendo particolare rilievo all'azione dell'attivista statunitense Edward Verne Roberts (1939-1995).

The paper analyzes the activity of Independent Living, focusing both on the theoretical level and on its real actions. The aim is to bring to light how, starting from the problematic claim for spaces of autonomy within society, the activists of the movement - becoming aware of their own identity and the evident asymmetry of their condition, from a social and political perspective - carried out initiatives that allowed them to demand subjective rights in the civil field, to consider themselves bearers of particular political goals and to become full citizens of demos. The reflection considers, on the one hand, the ability of the Movement to focus on concepts such as "human dignity", "fundamental rights", "equality of opportunities", "recognition", "self-determination"; on the other hand, underlines the originality with which it was able to regenerate the above-mentioned principles (showing the real limitations of their implementation in a liberal democratic society) and to bring them «from the heaven of principles» to a level of legal effectiveness. The essay, together with the analysis of the mentioned thematic focal points, dwells on the features and aims of Independent Living and focuses on its birth and evolution, with an emphasis on the action of the American activist Edward Verne Roberts (1939-1995).
